Ankle Brace Required for Volleyball...

There seems to be a growing trend with many J.O. and High School volleyball coaches. They are requiring all players to wear ankle braces. My daughter has never had bad ankles and my concern is the additional stress placed upon the knees. Also, I think that the ankle would come to depend on the brace and actually create a weakening of the ankle.

Ankle Braces
by: Mitch - MTS

What I always recommend to my athletes is that they never train in their ankle braces. Meaning, when we are lifting, running and performing athletic workouts, we don't use ankle braces. This is because I need the proprioceptors of the ankle joints to be very active all of the time. Because of this, I train my athletes on a single leg a lot. If they use braces, they limit the demand on the ankle proprioceptors and don't get the full effect that I want with their training.

As for games, I leave it up to the athlete as to whether or not they want to wear braces. My feeling is that if I have trained them well, they shouldn't need them, but not everyone is as confident as I am in my training techniques.

I am pretty selective on my brace selection. You want them to wear a brace that helps to prevent both ankle inversion and plantar flexion. Most braces only attempt to limit inversion, which is only limiting a very small number of injuries.
