Discoid Meniscus/Wrisberg Variant

by Cynthia Moriarty
(Tampa, FL)

Hi, my daughter is five and had her discoid meniscus and wrisberg variant repaired when she was three and recently had another tear in her meniscus.

She was playing tennis regularly. My question is: Due to the Discoid Meniscus is she more prone to continued tears if she plays sports and would you recommend one sport over another, golf versus tennis to eliminate future problems?

Thank you,
Cynthia Moriarty

Meniscus Issues
by: Mitch - MTS

Cynthia, this is an interesting question. To be honest, this is not something that I see very much, so I may not be the best person to answer your question. Obviously, anyone at age 3 that has a meniscus surgery is at a disadvantage as compared to others their age. Once you enter the joint and touch the tissue, it will never the quite the same.

So, it sounds like you understand that they will likely be at risk for knee issues in the future. I would recommend that you get her with a good therapist who understands biomechanics. If she was my patient, I would do everything that I could to unload her lateral meniscus. This can be done with good orthotics for starters. It can also be done with proper training to strengthen the gluts (especially the glut medius) and teach her to keep her knee out of a valgus position (knock kneed).

As far as your question regarding sport choices...I would let her do what she is comfortable with. Sports which are going to force her into planting and cutting with rotation will increase her likelihood of causing pain and irritation. Golf is a safer choice than tennis, but it still has some rotation. Cycling and swimming are better choices. That's not to say that she will be guaranteed not to have pain with swimming due to the kicking, but she won't have as much traumatic issues.

I hope this helps.
