Partial Patella Tendon Tear

One week ago while doing yogo, I was in a forward lunge with the right leg and felt a severe burning below my right knee. Since then have developed a lump lateral to my patella tendon with a lump and tenderness along tendon and below the tendon. I have iced and used a flector patch. With any walking or loading the knee such as carrying objects or wearing shoes with any heel have increased pain.

Pain is definately not a key symptom. I felt a small twinge and heard a feint pop. I didnt know for two days what I had done. Swelling was what gave it away for me. First day slight swell second day the knee was about as wide as my butt. Huge! Lol. No seriously this is the truth. I was able to not only walk but felt nothing. An mri confirmed the diagnosis.

consulted physician agreed with micro tears. will rest for one week and gradually work back into regular activity. swelling is improving as well as less pain at night and with use. thankyou for your assistance

It is possible that you had a partial tear of your patellar tendon, but it is rather unlikely. For that reason, would recommend that you see someone in your area to rule out anything crazy. Typically someone with an actual full thickness partial tear, you would be in great pain all of the time and would be unable to stand on it.

It is much more likely that you had an acute injury of your patellar tendon similar to tendonitis. This type of injury involves very small micro tears, but not a full tear of the tendon.

Assuming this is the injury, you will want to keep your activity level low for sever days to a week to allow the tissue to heal, form scar tissue, and calm down. Wearing high heels will definitely put a lot of the pressure on this area of your knee and will continue to cause pain and irritation. So, I would recommend you avoid this. You will also want to perform some massage across the tendon (especially where the lump is present) to help your body create good scar tissue.

As you begin to reinitiate activities, you will want to make sure that you focus your attention on strengthening your gluts and core. When performing any kind of squats or lunges, you will want to make sure that you sit everything back on your heels with your butt out. Your knees need to stay behind your toes with all movement.

Exercises such as bridges, miniband sidesteps, and planks will all be good for transferring the pain and pressure away for the tendon and back to other areas.
