Patella Tendon Snap

by Sat

Well, to start off I'm 15 years old and my doctor told me I have osgood schlatters and told me to cut down on basketball and to wear knee braces. Im on my school team and I take it easy and do a set of warmups that my doctor gave me before every activity. So, lately the pain had decreased until one day I was going up for a layup and heard a small snap under my left knee cap. To be honest the feeling of being scared that I won't be able to play ever again was more than the leg pain itself. My leg hurt and it felt like jelly, so i limped back to the locker room and kept my leg straight for a bit being unsure what to do. I got dressed and limped back home. I iced it for about 10 minutes, there was absolutely no swelling and I was able to bend my knee perfectly fine and straighten it fine. There was slight pain when I lifted my leg while laying down. 3 days after the injury, the pain completely stopped when either i walked or bended it. I just can't run or jump, or it feels like im going to fall . it hurts when i put sudden weight on it. I went to the doctor about 5 days after the injury and the doctor said i might've tore my tendon slightly and that i should not play anymore. she also referred me to an orthopedic who will take a look at it and also take a MRI on the area. I also got xrays which didn't show anything. I'm meeting my orthopedic in exactly 2 weeks, and I'm committed to not performing any physical activity and to rest. Ive been also soaking the area with hot salt water to increase blood flow as my doctor reccomended. I have about 3 season games in the meantime and wonder if the tendon would just heal on its own and i would be able to play? My question is , how long would it be until i am able to run/jump again'? Also is the damage serious? I just hope I can play again and i won't need surgery.

Thanks :)

Ok, that sounds good. Thanks because i've been scared a long time what's going to happen to my knees. I just hope my specialist gives news that are better than what I'm believing it is. I just want to get back on the court where i belong and hopefully i can. Thanks again for your answer :)

Knee Pain

I would like to see what the orthopedic surgeon has to say about your injury before I give you a lot of recommendations. A patellar tendon tear is very rare, especially in your age bracket, thus I'm not convinced that is your problem. It is probably more likely that you tore a little bit of cartilage in your knee. That is purely speculation though. In the meantime, I would do what you can to maintain strength and range of motion and try to walk and move as normally as possible. I would actually recommend that you stay away from heat, unless you are warming up for activity. After an acute injury, ice is always your friend and you can't go wrong by using it. You can make things worse if you use heat though. Hang in there and let the specialist give you some more specific instructions.
