possible strain biceps femoris and meniscus?

by Jenny
(Los Angeles )

hi well i recently had basketball basketball practice on Tuesday which was 7-12-11 and we were scrimmaging and I was dribbling the ball down the court , picked up my speed and as I was going towards the basket I guess u can say I stepped wrong with my right foot and I felt this pain in my right knee it didn't pop or anything it sounded like a little rip or tear u can say. and I fell to the floor but after a minute i got back up I was limping quite a bit but I was able to walk . So after that I walked to the side thinking that maybe I might have tweaked it so I wanted to walk it off and so I stretched it and put some ice, but I wasn't able to play again because it was bugging me, so I iced it till practice finished which was like around 6 , and when this happened it was around 4. So as I was walking outside to get picked up I was limping quite a bit because I was dealing with pain on the right side of the right knee. next day I couldn't walk because as I would feel my calf tighten which bugged a lot and also up towards the right side of the knee and about 3 inches up towards the right side of the thigh which as I researched was the biceps femoris. Both sides of the knee were swollen. It's Saturday now, I haven't gone to the doctor because I don't think it's such a big deal and was hoping it would be better by now and it is extremely better it's just a little stiff when I walk . I can extend my leg just fine without any pain but bending my knee is limited, the knee doesn't hurt more like the muscle on the right side of the knee and up and back of the biceps femoris. It's a little swollen not as much as before . I've iced and elevated it . but there is a little discomfort. Is it possible I could have pulled something? Possibly the meniscus too. How long before I can resume to full capacity? Im seeing the doctor on Monday but i wanna go in having an idea or clue of what I could possibly have. Thanks for taking the time to answer my question.

It is hard to know, based on the fact that I haven't been able to evaluate you in person. It sounds like you are doing the right things. I would say that if you are having some mechanical symptoms, such as catching or popping, it is more likely that it is a meniscus tear. If you are having mostly pain, I would lean more in the area of a biceps femoris strain. If it continues, make sure you get it evaluated by a physician or athletic trainer.
